A brief blog about the one year anniversary of my site, how things have been and where I’m going from here.

Hey everyone, so here we are at the one year anniversary of my blog. From the start, I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. I would say the results were interesting but not plentiful. What I have written I really enjoy and am honestly proud of, but after one year we have a mere 18 posts. Yeah, not exactly churning them out, am I? What happened is pretty simple: I wasn’t listening to myself. For quite a while I was more or less copying what Garry was doing with “Idol Is Shit”. This didn’t really work out because what Garry does and what I ended up wanting to do are pretty different. But definitely, if you are interested in reading much more regular posts from an idol fan you can check his site out in my recommended panel on the right or click this shiny blue text. He recently went to Japan and saw a boatload of idol and wrestling shows which I need to catch up on as well.

Ultimately, what I want is just a decent looking, ad-free blog to express myself how often or how little as I please. I do not wish to adhere to any kind of routine or schedule. I don’t want to limit myself in or try to force certain topics. In return, I ask nothing of you, my dear readers. There’s no donation buttons or any kind of ads I benefit from… nada. The only advertisements might come from Disqus and I’m totally cool with you doing what ya gotta do if you know what I mean. The domain and hosting from this site are totally sustainable by myself alone and I’ll never ask anyone for a dime because this site is a vanity project for me. It’s for me to enjoy and while I hope others do as well, I do it mainly as an outlet for my fandom. Lately, outlets feel kinda hard to come by.

At least for me, the idol fandom scenery has changed a lot. Twitter used to be impossible to keep up with, but lately, it’s flat line. Sure, the idols are still there and posting their kawaii pictures, but the fans? For one reason or another, I don’t hear from many anymore. There are a lot of reasons for that, but the fact is my mentions lately are not what they once were. There’s Discord which is a little more active, but I haven’t had a lot of time for something more real-time oriented, so establishing myself there hasn’t gone very far. Don’t get me wrong, I still talk to plenty of people and I’m totally thankful for all my friends, but it would be hard to miss the massive dip in the frequency of hobby and general banter.

It also doesn’t help matters that I myself have changed a lot. I’ve been on a huge self-help kick the last several months and some of my viewspoints aren’t exactly in line with the younger crowd or even my age group anymore, which a lot of fandom is. That, and I just don’t focus as much on the Internet anymore. Ultimately, it is what it is. I’m easy to find, and I try to not blow anyone off who wants to talk it up. I try to be welcoming but I don’t have any interest in friction or chasing. It was a huge mistake I made for so many years and I just want that part of my life to be history, even if it means a smaller circle. Anyway, this is getting kinda hard to discuss without naming particular issues which I’m not interested in doing, so let’s move on.

So going forward, yes, the blog will stay up. The domain and hosting have already been renewed and paid for. The name of the game now is just doing whatever I want, whenever I want to and have the time to do it. Getting those two things to match up can be a bit of a struggle at times, but it is what it is. I do want to try to do more on the site in year two for sure. I think letting all the pressure off myself will help. If it doesn’t, hey, I’m no worse off. I’ll continue to cover whatever my fancy is. The name is “Mike Check” after all, and aside from being a super original word play, I want it to fit. Mike checks stuff out. TV Shows, K-Pop, J-Pop, anime, idols, the latest broom I bought… basically whatever I feel like sharing. Don’t worry though, I’ve had the same broom for like 12 years. It’s a solid 4 out of 5, by the way.

Oh, and I did a revamp of the site’s look. Again, starting up I kinda just took what Garry did with his and ran with it. It wasn’t bad at all, but I think I like the new layout and colors better. And yes, it’s a more plain black and white. I’m not a very artsy person, so please pardon the basic looks. I think it’s way better than that blue I had from before. I could never get it just how I wanted, so we’ll run with this for now.

Finally I just want to say thanks. Thanks for listening to me rant, rave, and ramble on this site and online in general. It’s a fun thing for me to do when I get to and feel like doing it and I hope you’ll keep coming around for more. See ya around.
