Hottest Mess Award: AKB48 2018 Senbatsu Sousenkyo
If I may turn on the haterade for just one second, I will say that the past year’s AKB sousenkyo was such a mess. The whole thing felt so obtuse with Sashihara bowing out, several girls were obviously annoyed with their rank, Suda Akari got a baffling second place, and of course, the crown jewel was the Jurina drama that ensued. Not that it wasn’t already happening for a while but this event really made me see just how much the 48 Group empire has changed to a point where I don’t really recognize it anymore. More power to everyone who’s a fan and all, but I just don’t really feel connected anymore. And now, with Sashihara graduating in 2019, I think the end is truly coming for whatever’s left of my fandom. It’s kinda weird to see a group that basically used to be my entire Japanese idol fandom shrink away into just another group at BEST, but that’s how it is. I honestly don’t see myself watching the 2019 sousenkyo.
Miyawaki Sakura did the right thing. Just. Sayin’.
But hey, at least 2019 is looking up for them right? Wrong.
I’m not even going to dive in on that topic. It’s just terrible. That’s all that needs to be said.
Thank you for reading.
And I think that’s all she wrote folks. 2019 is going to be a big year of change for me. It has to be. If you’ve read my Twitter it’s impossible to not see that I’ve been a little… off center, let’s call it, for a while now. One way or another, I have to get myself level again. It just has to happen. Hobby-wise, too. I feel like since the AKB thing died for me I’ve kinda been drifty and unproductive, so I need to find where I’m at there, too. I think I can just sum it all up as this: I need to find equilibrium in life and what makes me happy, and just do that. Yeah, that sums up a very complex set of issues nicely.
Thanks for reading this post and anything else you may have read on this site up to this point. I do hope to be more active on this blog this year. I have some ideas for a new format that will be less time consuming, but hopefully still productive so look out for that in the coming weeks. In the meantime, I hope everyone has a great 2019 and let’s see what lovely entertainment awaits us. Until next time!
